What is it? / Overview
Vinpocetine is proposed to increase cerebral blood flow, inhibit phosphodiesterase-1, and reduce platelet aggregation, but human blood levels achieved from oral dosing are far lower than the levels shown effective in animal studies, which may explain why controlled trials found no cognitive benefit in healthy adults or people with epilepsy. It has no regulatory approval anywhere for a cognitive indication.

Form: Vinpocetine (synthetic ethyl ester of apovincamine, derived from Vinca minor)
Typical dose studied: No dose recommended given the safety profile below -- trials commonly used 5-20 mg three times daily
Timing: With food
No demonstrated efficacy; the FDA's 2019 reproductive-harm warning is the main concern. It applies to women of childbearing potential more broadly, not only those who are currently pregnant.

Interacts with: Anticoagulants, antiplatelets -- additive bleeding via platelet-inhibiting effect; Antihypertensives -- theoretical additive effect
Already taking it? The U.S. FDA warned in 2019 that vinpocetine may cause miscarriage or fetal harm and advised against use in pregnancy or by women of childbearing potential not using contraception -- worth raising with a doctor if you currently use it. Controlled trials in healthy adults found no cognitive benefit.
