What is it? / Overview
Unlike hydrolyzed collagen, which acts as an amino-acid building-block substrate, a small oral dose of undenatured type II collagen is thought to work through oral tolerance -- intact epitopes interact with gut-associated lymphoid tissue, dampening the autoimmune-like attack on joint cartilage and reducing pain and stiffness. The main positive trial was industry-sponsored, though, and an independent 2025 RCT found no benefit over placebo.
How is it used? / Administration
Form: Undenatured (native) type II collagen from chicken sternum cartilage -- distinct from hydrolyzed collagen peptides
Typical dose studied: 40 mg/day, standardized to ~10 mg bioactive undenatured collagen
Timing: Once daily, often at bedtime on an empty stomach; assessed over 90-180 days
Distinct from the existing Collagen Peptides entry (see that separate entry) -- that entry covers hydrolyzed collagen's amino-acid-substrate mechanism, while UC-II is a much smaller dose working through a completely different oral-tolerance mechanism. Independent replication is weak.
How well does it work? / Evidence
? Emerging / limited evidence
Who should avoid it?
Avoid with: Food Allergies
Already taking it? The strongest positive trial was industry-sponsored, and a 2025 independent RCT found no benefit over placebo -- reasonable to continue only if there's a genuine personal benefit, since replication has been weak.
