What is it? / Overview
Slippery elm is rich in mucilage -- polysaccharides that swell in water to form a viscous, gel-like coating thought to soothe irritated mucosa. This is a physical, demulcent effect rooted in traditional use; there's no controlled trial evidence in specific GI conditions, just plausible mechanism.
How is it used? / Administration
Form: Slippery elm (Ulmus rubra) inner-bark powder, lozenges, or capsules
Typical dose studied: ~400-500 mg capsules, or 1-2 tsp powder in water; no formally established dose
Timing: With ample water; separate from medications by at least 2 hours
Included primarily for tracking and the drug-absorption interaction flag -- absence of trial evidence should be stated honestly if surfaced.
How well does it work? / Evidence
? Emerging / limited evidence
Who should avoid it?
Avoid with: Breastfeeding
Interacts with: All oral medications -- the mucilage can coat the gut and delay/reduce absorption; separate dosing by 2+ hours
Already taking it? Low-risk to continue if it's helping and taken away from other medications, though there's no controlled trial evidence behind the specific-condition benefit.
