Our experts personally review each product we recommend for quality and cost effectiveness.
The cheapest product is usually low quality, but more expensive doesn’t always mean better.
PHGG is a soluble, non-gelling, fermentable fiber. In the colon it's fermented to short-chain fatty acids and increases beneficial bacteria (a prebiotic effect) while normalizing transit -- softening and accelerating stool in constipation and reducing bloating in IBS, with dropout rates in trials actually lower than placebo.
Form: Water-soluble, non-gelling fermentable fiber (e.g. Sunfiber brand)
Typical dose studied: 5-6 g/day
Timing: Once daily, mixed into food or liquid; start low to limit gas
As with all fibers, take with adequate fluid and introduce gradually; caution in swallowing disorders or bowel obstruction/stricture applies to fiber supplements generally.
~ Moderate evidence
Avoid with: Dysphagia / Difficulty swallowing
Interacts with: Oral medications generally -- soluble fiber may modestly slow absorption; separate dosing
Already taking it? Reasonable to continue -- this is the best-supported item in this batch, with a lower gas/bloating profile than inulin-type fibers.
