What is it? / Overview
Niacin (vitamin B3) is required in small amounts for energy metabolism and DNA repair; nutritional-level intake prevents deficiency. Separately, gram-level doses of nicotinic acid (not niacinamide) have documented lipid effects, but this is a pharmacological, clinician-directed use, and its added benefit on top of statin therapy is now considered limited by current research.
How is it used? / Administration
Form: Niacinamide (nicotinamide) — standard nutritional/no-flush form. Immediate-release or extended-release niacin (nicotinic acid) is a separate, drug-like intervention for lipid management and should only be used under physician supervision; niacinamide does not share nicotinic acid's lipid effects.
Typical dose studied: 14–16 mg/day (RDA) for nutritional adequacy. Gram-level nicotinic acid doses used for lipid management are a clinician-directed therapy, not a self-directed wellness dose.
Timing: With food to reduce GI upset
Niacinamide and nicotinic acid are not interchangeable — niacinamide avoids flushing and liver stress but does not lower lipids; nicotinic acid affects lipids but should only be used at therapeutic doses under physician supervision, not self-directed.
