What is it? / Overview
Huperzine A inhibits acetylcholinesterase, increasing acetylcholine concentrations in the brain. Some clinical studies suggest modest improvements in memory, particularly in Alzheimer's disease or mild cognitive impairment, but larger, higher-quality trials are needed before routine use can be recommended.
How is it used? / Administration
Form: Purified alkaloid extracted from Huperzia serrata
Typical dose studied: 100–200 mcg once or twice daily
Timing: Morning or divided into two daily doses
IMPORTANT: significant interaction risk if combined with prescription cholinesterase inhibitors. More evidence in Alzheimer's disease than healthy adults.

Avoid with: Asthma; Epilepsy / Seizure disorder
Interacts with: Cholinesterase inhibitors (donepezil, rivastigmine, galantamine); Anticholinergic medications; Beta-blockers and other heart-rate-lowering medications — additive bradycardia risk given huperzine A's own cholinergic, heart-rate-slowing effect
Already taking it? Avoid combining with prescription Alzheimer's medications unless supervised by a physician.
