The cheapest product is usually low quality, but more expensive doesn’t always mean better.
Wellness uses some people report: calm and relaxation support. This is anecdotal, and there isn't strong clinical evidence that it works for everyone. GABA is the brain's main inhibitory neurotransmitter, so oral supplementation is marketed to promote calm -- but orally ingested GABA crosses the blood-brain barrier poorly, so any effects may be mediated peripherally (enteric nervous system or vagal signaling) rather than centrally. A systematic review found limited evidence for stress and very limited evidence for sleep.
Form: Gamma-aminobutyric acid (synthetic or fermentation-derived, e.g. PharmaGABA)
Typical dose studied: 100-300 mg
Timing: Before bed for sleep, or during acute stress; some report effects within about 1 hour
The blood-brain-barrier limitation is the honest caveat to lead with -- benefits, if real, are modest and short-term.
? Emerging / limited evidence
Avoid with: Breastfeeding
Interacts with: Benzodiazepines, alcohol, other CNS depressants -- theoretical additive sedation; Antihypertensives -- theoretical additive blood-pressure lowering
Already taking it? Reasonable, low-risk to continue if it's helping -- oral GABA crosses the blood-brain barrier poorly, so evidence for a real effect is limited, and any benefit may work through the gut/enteric nervous system rather than the brain directly.
