What is it? / Overview
Wellness uses some people report: general longevity support (the 'longevity vitamin'). This is anecdotal, and there isn't strong clinical evidence that it works for everyone. Ergothioneine is a diet-derived thiol antioxidant selectively taken up by cells via the OCTN1 transporter, where it scavenges reactive oxygen and nitrogen species and activates Nrf2, concentrating in tissues under oxidative stress. Low blood levels are consistently linked to cognitive decline and higher mortality in observational studies, leading some researchers to call it a candidate 'longevity vitamin,' though causal outcome trials are still needed.
How is it used? / Administration
Form: L-ergothioneine (amino-thione from mushrooms), mushroom-derived or fermentation-produced
Typical dose studied: Studied safely up to ~25 mg/day
Timing: Daily with food
One of the better safety profiles in this batch -- the main honest caveat is that observational association isn't the same as proven causal benefit.
How well does it work? / Evidence
? Emerging / limited evidence
Who should avoid it?
Already taking it? Excellent observed safety profile and a strong biological rationale -- reasonable to continue, though large causal human outcome trials are still needed before it can be called proven.
