What is it? / Overview
Elderberry contains anthocyanins with antiviral and immune-modulating properties in laboratory studies, but clinical evidence on immunity benefits is mixed — some small trials and meta-analyses suggest a possible modest reduction in cold/flu symptom duration when started early, while other reviews find the evidence inconclusive. It does not support general infection-prevention claims.

Form: Standardized elderberry extract or syrup (Sambucus nigra)
Typical dose studied: 300–600 mg extract, or syrup per product label, at first sign of illness
Timing: At the first sign of cold/flu symptoms, continued through the illness
Evidence on immunity benefits is mixed, limited to possible symptom-duration effects when started early — not established for preventing infections generally. Caution warranted for anyone on immunosuppressive therapy given its immune-stimulating mechanism.
