The cheapest product is usually low quality, but more expensive doesn’t always mean better.
Chondroitin sulfate is a structural component of cartilage. Evidence for reducing osteoarthritis pain is mixed, and guideline recommendations differ across professional bodies — some studies suggest possible effects on joint space narrowing, but this isn't established as a general product-class effect.
Form: Pharmaceutical-grade/high-purity chondroitin sulfate where possible, often combined with glucosamine
Typical dose studied: 800–1,200 mg/day
Timing: With food
Often derived from shellfish or bovine cartilage — check sourcing if allergic to shellfish. Not effective for acute injuries.
~ Moderate evidence
Interacts with: Blood thinners (Warfarin)
Already taking it? Evaluate benefit after 2–3 months; often combined with glucosamine, and the combination has somewhat more consistent evidence than either alone.
