What is it? / Overview
Bitter melon constituents enhance peripheral glucose uptake and augment insulin secretion and beta-cell ATP production, while inhibiting intestinal glucose absorption. Evidence across trials is genuinely inconsistent -- a Cochrane review found no significant effect versus placebo or other therapy, while some individual trials found meaningful HbA1c reduction, though less than glibenclamide head-to-head.

Timing: With meals
Raw fruit/seeds contain vicine, a trigger for hemolysis in people with G6PD deficiency (favism) -- worth flagging for anyone with that condition even though it's a narrow population. Traditional use also includes it as an abortifacient; the platform's intake flow already hard-blocks recommendation generation for anyone reporting current pregnancy, but this is worth stating plainly given how casually bitter melon is often marketed.

Already taking it? Evidence is genuinely inconsistent across trials -- reasonable to continue only with close monitoring if combined with any glucose-lowering medication, given documented cases of significant hypoglycemia.
