What is it? / Overview
In BPH, beta-sitosterol improves urinary flow and symptom scores -- improved peak flow, lower residual volume -- without reducing prostate size, likely via effects on prostate smooth-muscle tone and inflammation rather than strong 5-alpha-reductase inhibition. As a plant sterol, it also competes with cholesterol for intestinal absorption, modestly lowering LDL, which is the mechanism the existing Plant Sterols entry covers at a higher dose.
How is it used? / Administration
Form: Beta-sitosterol (often from pine or Hypoxis/South African star grass) -- distinct from, though related to, the existing Plant Sterols entry
Typical dose studied: 60-130 mg/day for BPH/urinary symptoms (e.g. 20 mg three times daily); ~2 g/day as part of a broader plant-sterol blend for cholesterol
Timing: With meals
Distinct from the existing Plant Sterols entry (see that separate entry) -- that entry covers the cholesterol-lowering use at ~2 g/day of a broader sterol/stanol blend, while beta-sitosterol at 60-130 mg/day has separate, better-characterized BPH/urinary evidence. Product standardization across commercial BPH supplements is poor, and effects are symptomatic, not disease-modifying.

Interacts with: Fat-soluble vitamins -- as a plant sterol, may modestly reduce absorption
Already taking it? Reasonable to continue -- symptomatic urinary benefit doesn't mean the prostate has shrunk, so new or worsening symptoms still warrant evaluation, not just more beta-sitosterol.
