What is it? / Overview
Microalgae synthesize preformed EPA and DHA directly, bypassing the inefficient ALA-to-EPA-to-DHA conversion pathway that plant sources like flaxseed rely on. These long-chain omega-3s incorporate into cell membranes, lower triglycerides, and generate anti-inflammatory mediators -- a scoping review found microalgal oil reliably raised the omega-3 index in every study, unlike flax or echium oil.
How is it used? / Administration
Form: Microalgal (Schizochytrium/Crypthecodinium) oil providing preformed DHA, sometimes with added EPA -- the only plant-derived source shown to reliably raise the omega-3 index, making it the preferred vegan/vegetarian alternative to fish oil
Typical dose studied: ~200-500 mg DHA (plus/minus EPA)/day for general use; 1-2+ g EPA/DHA for triglyceride-lowering, mirroring fish-oil dosing
Timing: With a fat-containing meal to aid absorption
Cross-links to the existing Omega-3 (Fish Oil) entry (see that separate entry) -- same active compounds (EPA/DHA), different source; this is the entry to recommend for anyone on a vegetarian or vegan diet pattern instead of fish oil.
How well does it work? / Evidence
~ Moderate evidence
Who should avoid it?
Avoid with: Bleeding disorder / Coagulopathy
Interacts with: Anticoagulants, antiplatelets -- theoretical additive bleeding risk at high doses, same as fish oil
Already taking it? Reasonable to continue -- the best-supported vegan/vegetarian omega-3 source, since it supplies preformed EPA/DHA directly rather than relying on the body's inefficient conversion from plant ALA.
