The cheapest product is usually low quality, but more expensive doesn’t always mean better.
Wellness uses some people report: general mood support. This is anecdotal, and there isn't strong clinical evidence that it works for everyone. 5-HTP is a direct precursor to serotonin. Evidence for its effects on depression and sleep is limited and heterogeneous across trials, and it should not be combined with other serotonin-affecting medications.
Form: 5-HTP (from Griffonia simplicifolia seed extract)
Typical dose studied: 50–300 mg/day, starting at the low end
Timing: Evening, 30–45 minutes before bed
The serotonergic-medication interaction is the key safety issue — not the diagnosis of depression or anxiety itself. Someone with a mood disorder who isn't on a serotonergic medication isn't automatically at risk, but anyone on one absolutely should not combine without clinician oversight.
? Emerging / limited evidence
Interacts with: SSRIs; SNRIs; MAOIs (Monoamine oxidase inhibitors); Tramadol; Triptans
Already taking it? Do not combine with serotonergic antidepressants or migraine medications without physician guidance — a pharmacologically plausible and clinically important serotonin syndrome risk, though exact incidence per combination isn't well quantified.
